Port Arthur, Tasmania Port Arthur, Tasmania is a small and picturesque town on the southeastern coast, about 60 km from Tasmania's capital of Hobart. It is primarily history, not beaches or big city entertainment, that draws visitors to this small town on the Tasman peninsula.

Visitors to Port Arthur, Tasmania are treated to a trip into the past, to an era that was harsher and a bit less enlightened. In the early days of Australia's colonial period the continent was used to house numerous penal colonies. While many of those original colonies eventually became some of Australia's biggest cities, the penal colony at Port Arthur, Tasmania was a little different. An impoverished 19th century Londoner could be sent to Australia for even a mild offense, but Port Arthur was a more secure site used to house repeat offenders and the more egregious criminals.

As such, Port Arthur, Tasmania still exhibits many of its original facilities. This open-air museum, one of the most important heritage sites in all of Australia, is perhaps Tasmania's top tourist destinations. Many visitors opt for a guided walking tour of the main site that offers a rare glimpse of the life and society of a penal colony. The facility also shows the rapid evolution of British ideals of justice and prisoners' rights during the 19th century.

In spite of its somewhat remote location, Port Arthur, Tasmania is easily reached by highway or ferry. For those desiring a broader tour, there is also a Harbour Cruise available. Located in and around the harbour are Point Puer Boys' Prison and the cemetery on the Isle of the Dead, where between 1833 and 1877 about a thousand burials took place. Evidently these fellows served a life sentence in the most literal sense. Tours are available at both of these sites as well; they are accessible by watercraft, so remember to allow time for the ferry trip.

History

The peninsula upon which Port Arthur is settled embodies a naturally protected site by being hemmed in by water. The thirty metre in width of Eaglehawk Neck constituted the sole link to the mainland was fenced in and defended by soldiers and half-starved dogs.

Liaison between guest seafarers and prisoners was blocked. Ships birthed had to verify in their sails and oars upon landing to forestall any breaks outs. Nevertheless, numerous efforts were made, and a few were victorious. Boats were captured and rowed or navigated long distances to freedom.

Port Arthur made up the address for adolescent convicts, getting numerous boys, a few as early as 9 years old apprehended for thieving toys. The boys were isolated from the primary convict population and retained Point Puer, boys' prison. Suchlike the grownups, the boys were utilised in gruelling grind such as stone cutting and building. Among the buildings built comprised one of Australia's 1st nonsectarian churches, constructed in a Gothic architecture. Attending the weekly Sunday religious service was mandatory for the prison population. Critics of the fresh scheme observed that this and additional steps appeared to deliver minimal affect on reformation.

Notwithstanding its repute as a pioneering innovation for the new, enlightened perspective of captivity, Port Arthur was nevertheless in fact as cruel and harsh as other penal colonies. A few critics may even propose that they're employment of mental punishment, intensified with no promise of escape, made it among the toughest. A few stories paint a picture that prisoners perpetrated murder merely to escape the bleakness of living at the camp. The Island of the Dead constituted the address for each who passed away within the prison camps. Of the 1646 graves registered to exist in that location, just one hundred eighty, those of prison staff and combatant force, are commemorated. The prison shut down in 1877
